What is EATWISE?

EATWISE (Educated and Aware Teens Who Inspire Smart Eating) is a teen development program run by Food Bank For New York City, a non-profit organization. High School students become nutrition educators by gaining knowledge about food and nutrition issues, by attaining skills in public speaking, facilitation and education, and by creating and conducting their own nutrition workshops and events.

What are the goals of EATWISE?

• To develop food and nutrition knowledge in participating youth
• To increase knowledge of diet-related diseases.
• To develop leadership, public speaking, and community work skills in participating youth;
• To improve the eating habits of participating youth, their families, and their communities; and
• To further Food Bank For New York City’s work in promoting access to nutritious food for all New Yorkers.

How does EATWISE work?

EATWISE Chapters

Food Bank For New York City helps establish EATWISE chapters at participating high schools across the city, which in turn, run their own EATWISE events. These chapters can take many forms, but are generally an after-school food and nutrition club.

Summer Program

For seven weeks during the summer participating youth get paid to work in Food Bank For New York City’s community kitchen and food pantry in Harlem, grow vegetables in a school garden, plan and conduct youth-led nutrition events, and organize community actions promoting healthy eating.

Part-Time EATWISE Staff

In the following years, we hope to introduce a Youth Staff element to our program. Youth who have participated in the summer program and or the academic year internship will be eligible to apply to become part-time EATWISE staff during the academic year. As such, youth take on more responsibility and leadership assisting Food Bank For New York City staff in running the EATWISE programs.

What is Food Bank For New York City?

The mission of the Food Bank For New York City is to end hunger by organizing food, information and support for community survival and dignity.
